Aciclovir tablets  are an immediate-acting antiviral medication, specifically targeting certain viruses such as herpes simplex virus (HSV types 1 and 2) and chickenpox and shingles virus (VZV). It was discovered in the mid-1970s from certain sea sponges in the Caribbean.

Aciclovir tablets were authorized for sale in 1998. It is primarily used to treat or prevent certain forms of herpes (skin infections, mucous membranes, genitals, oral) or to prevent ocular complications of the ophthalmic zona.

It is found in the form of swallowable tablets dosed at 200 or 800 mg, oral suspension dosed at 200 mg/5 ml, injectable solutions dosed at 250 or 500 mg, ophthalmic ointment or creams dosed at 5%.

Zovirax Cold Sores | How it Works

ACICLOVIR works by preventing the production of viral DNA from the herpesvirus (HSV-1 and HSV-2), chickenpox and zoster virus (VZV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and cytomegalovirus (CMV). It therefore stops the replication of viruses present in cells. It does not interfere with the metabolism of healthy cells. When taken orally, acyclovir is poorly absorbed from the intestines (approximately 20% of the administered amount).

Therefore, if a large dose is needed, intravenous use may be necessary. Its peak blood concentration is reached after 1 to 2 hours. It is distributed in the brain, kidneys, lungs, liver, muscles, and vaginal secretions. It is then eliminated primarily renally; its half-life (the time at which half of the dose is eliminated) is approximately 3 hours.

Buy Aciclovir | Why Take Aciclovir?

ACICLOVIR is indicated for the prevention of herpes simplex virus infections (HSV types 1 and 2) in immunocompromised people or in cases of frequent recurrences (at least 6 recurrences per year), as well as for the treatment of skin infections or severe mucous membrane infections (Genital herpes, acute herpetic gingivostomatitis) and for the treatment of recurrences of genital herpes.

ACICLOVIR is also used to prevent recurrences of HSV ocular infections and to treat keratitis or keratotic rash in HSV.

Finally, Aciclovir in injectable form may also be prescribed for the prevention of ocular complications of the ophthalmological zona, in the case of severe forms of the zona, in the treatment of primary or recurrent infections of HSV in immunocompromised people, in the treatment of herpetic meningospecimelitis or in the treatment of HSV infections in infants under 3 months of age.

Aciclovir Cold Sores | Aciclovir Dosage

Aciclovir should always be taken as soon as possible, within the first two days of the onset of symptoms. The dosage of Aciclovir (the medication indicated for those 6 years of age) is 5 to 10 tablets or applications per day, and at regular intervals for herpes simplex ( tablets or cream).

For preventative use, the dosage is two doses in the morning and evening. For intravenous administration, acyclovir is administered every 8 hours. In case of renal failure or in the elderly, the dosage should be adjusted according to the doctor’s advice.

In conclusion, the duration of treatment is generally 5 to 10 days for herpetic herpes and can last up to several months for preventative treatment. The creams are recommended for localized herpes (cutaneous, labial, genital).
